Chalmer "Gene" E. Hanson

Chalmer E. Hanson (Gene) 97, of Columbus, passed away peacefully, Monday, September 19, 2022, at the home of his daughter, Valerie, and her husband Mike, where he was lovingly cared for over the past 2 years. He was born July 28, 1925 in Marion, Indiana, the son of Vern and Eva Hanson.

Gene was a WWII Army Veteran, he served in Normandy, France, where his unit was part of the third wave to go in on Utah Beach. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in the line of duty. He was a bread route driver most of his life, and loved what he did. He worked for Cecutti's Bakery and Klosterman Bakery where he was loved by his customers. He had a wonderful sense of humor and the gift of gab. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He had a strong faith and trust in God and attended various churches throughout the years. In addition, he was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan. “O-H!”

Gene is survived by son, Jack (Elsa) Hanson; daughters, Valerie (Mike) Miller and Sharon (Jeff) Hawkins; 6 Grandchildren;13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary M. Hanson (married January 29, 1943) and 9 siblings. Gene will be greatly missed, by friends and family who loved him deeply.  

Family will receive friends from 11:00a.m.-1:00p.m. on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2022 at the RADER-MCDONALD-TIDD FUNERAL HOME, 1355 West Main Street, West Jefferson, Ohio 43162 (614)-879-9222 where his Funeral Service will be held 1:00p.m. FRIDAY.  Burial with Military Honors will follow the service at Sunset Cemetery, Galloway, Ohio.
