Shirley Ann Greene, age 85, of London, died peacefully at home surround by loved ones on Friday, January 24, 2025.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Shirley was a proud graduate of London High School, Class of 1957. Shortly after high school, Shirley met the love of her life, Jesse Greene, from her rivalry school, West Jefferson. Together they shared just shy of 66 years of marriage and built a beautiful life together.
Her life was marked by a deep love for her family and community. Shirley and Jesse made their home in London, Ohio where they raised their family and created countless cherished memories. Shirley’s greatest accomplishment was being “Granny,” a role she embraced wholeheartedly. She played a vital part in the upbringing of her grandchildren and bonus grandchildren, pouring her love and energy into their lives. Somehow, she managed to juggle it all; watching the kids, taking them to appointments, bake cookies, attend their school/sporting events, patch up every scraped kneed and bruised ego, and still prepared a homemade dinner every evening that was served at 4pm for the entire family to enjoy. She insisted we stay to eat, and we would not dare disappoint Granny.
The grandchildren were lucky to grow up experiencing the joys of country living under Granny’s watchful eye. They spent summers splashing in plastic swimming pools, chasing each other with the water hose, playing in the barn and riding 4-wheelers. One favorite memory was being pulled on a wood toboggan sled behind the 4-wheeler in the summertime, often accompanied by the family herding dog, who loved to playfully knock the kids off the sled. These simple yet unforgettable moments were a testament to the love and adventures that Granny brought into their lives.
Shirley loved to bake, and we all looked forward to “Cookie Baking” day. She was renowned for her baking. Her zucchini bread, no-bake cookies, peanut brittle, buckeyes, and an impressive assortment of Christmas cookies delighted friends and family alike. She especially enjoyed bringing her famous cookie trays to holiday events, spreading joy and sweetness wherever she went.
Shirley had a deep passion for animals, a love she passed down to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. For 20 years, she served as a 4-H advisor for the Darby Riders Horse Club, sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with young riders. She also showed and bred Cocker Spaniels in confirmation for a decade.
Shirley self-taught herself to crochet and cross-stitch, creating beautiful, handmade gifts for her family. From cozy blankets to cross-stitched sweatshirts. Shirley made sure every family member had something special made with love. No matter what the craft or project, Shirley always had something she was working on, a testament to her creativity and dedication.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband and best friend; Jesse Greene, sister; Billie Lou Ray, children; Tamara (Jeff) Kurtz, Teresa (Rich) Buchanan, Doug (Connie) Greene, grandchildren; Tyler (Ashley) Buchanan, Kylee (Billy) Daily, Justin Green (DJ Helton), Alexandra (Justin) Ault, Hilary (Daniel) Crawford, Cortney (Logan) Miller, great-grandchildren; Olivia, Peyton, Greyson Buchanan, Braxton, Cooper Brown, Charlee, Braxton, Hayden, Lincoln Daily, Jenna Kurtz, David, Gabe Levinson, Palmer, Cal Ault, Lyla Crawford, Braxton Wright, Jaxon Miller
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Mary Hughes, grandson, Brandon Kurtz and Teko (dog).
Shirley’s legacy lives on through her loving husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. Her presence will be deep missed, but her spirit will remain forever in the hearts of all who loved her.
